2012 Victory Hard Ball Review A new model has been announced by Victory with styling features including a helmet based on a scorched coconut, legs too stumpy to be able to retract the sidestand and a long and intensive burger-driven mass centralisation programme.

The core of the 2012 Hard-Ball mirrors the High-Ball same two-way adjustable factory Apehangers, spoked wheels wrapped in beefy tires, and Victory’s quick-revving Freedom 106 spooned tightly in the frame. And that’s a good thing. The 1731cc Freedom 106 provides a spirited ride with a wide spread of power on the High-Ball, and despite a little larger fender on the front end, steering should still be light with the absence of a fairing most baggers or tourers sport. Gauges are Spartan, consisting of a small round analog speedo with basic diagnostic symbols incorporated into the face like a Neutral indicator, ABS engagement indicator, low fuel warning, high beams, cruise control and an engine problem warning light.

The bike will be available only in black with red pinstripes and is "hopefully" due to be publicly unveiled in the UK at the Carole Nash MCN Motorcycle Show at London’s ExCel from February 2-5 next year. It’s expected in dealers from late February/early March with the price confirmed at £15,995.

Ten years! To mark the ‘Rod’s notable birthday Harley has created a 10th Anniversary Edition V-Rod as part of the company’s 2012 model lineup. The 10th joins the Night Rod Special and Muscle, making the VRSC series a family of three for this year.

The Night Rod special updates for 2012 include ABS as standard, Brembo double disc brakes, upside forks with new hydraulic system, and a classic double rear shock. The look is dominated by the Michelin Scorcher tyres, and new alloy wheels save 1.4 kg - off the overall weight of 289 kg. A narrow rear light is part of the style and a new inclusion upfront is the smaller front mudguard, but otherwise it’s the same old Rod.

Built in collaboration with Dreamachine Motorcycles, the Akrapovič Morsus features an S&S 113 CI (that’s 1,852cc for the mertic-inclined) motor that pumps out 114hp through its modified Akrapovič exhaust pipe. The Morsus design appeases our modern-leaning design sensibilities, but true to its ethos, it’s the Akrapovič exhaust that really makes us drool over this bike. There’s something about an underslung side-venting pipe that makes us happy, and the Akrapovič Morsus is no exception to the rule. Photos and more after the jump.

The Morsus was victorious among 120 custom bikes and also won the Radical category. At Lake Faak Akrapovič successfully presented its aftermarket range of exhaust systems for the Harley Davidson.

Even more interesting than the Morsus, really, is the story of Akrapovic. Though Igor Akrapovic (pronounced a-CROP-o-vitch) only started bending pipes 20 years ago (under the name Scorpion until ’97), his exhausts have found their way onto a large percentage of influential motorcycles, including but not limited to Ben Spies’ R1, Jorge Lorenzo’s M1, Bubba Stewart’s YZ450F, Max Biaggi’s Aprilia the list goes on. The first championship was with Colin Edwards’ Honda SP-01 in 2000.

This caught me by surprise on occasion during slow speed maneuvering when the bike lunged forward, but the majority of the time it is a boon. And while the clutch action is lively, the 6-speed Cruise Drive Transmission still engages with a familiar ‘click,’ but every year Harley seems to dial it in a little bit better as the 2010 version is a touch quieter and better-sorted than before. Even though you feel every shift, the tranny at least hit each gear without a miss and the new helical-cut fifth gear offers a broad range of power, from loping along in low revs at 55 to winding it out up to 90 mph. Frequently I believed I was in the top gear before realizing I had one more click to go.

2012 New Concept Husqvarna Strada Husqvarna is unveiling their latest concept bike at the Salon de la Moto show in Paris today. The Concept Strada, like the new Nuda 900 before it, is a Husky street bike built with the help of BMW engineering and parts this time, an adapted 650cc single cylinder engine from BMW’s G650GS is used. Unlike some concept bikes, however, this bike is production ready and will be in showrooms in 2012.

The Husqvarna Concept Strada is fitted with BMW’s single-cylinder 650cc engine the same unit that’s fitted to the BMW G650GS. However, it’s been tuned for improved power delivery and, accordingly to Husqvarna, the upgrade has resulted in an extremely lively machine which, at less than 170kg dry, will put a smile back on the face of even the weariest commuter.’

Power is supplied from BMW’s G 650 GS single-cylinder powerplant, but it has been "breathed on" by Husqvarna engineers for even more clout a similar exercise to the Nuda, which used BMWs 800cc parallel twin as the donor powerplant before adding some more pepper.

BMW-powered, but Husqvarna-driven, the Concept Strada will be the perfect machine for taking on the urban jungle. 2012 Suzuki DR-Z 400 S Review Take the DR-Z400S down a twisty forest trail and its off-road performance will get your heart pounding. Suzuki has been selling the DR-Z400 since 2000, and since then has developed a huge network of loyal customers. With the ultra-popular DR350 as a predecessor, the 400 has built on that success and continues to this day as a simple, effective dual-sport machine. The last time we tested a DR-Z400 was back in 2003, and the company was still offering a kickstart-only model. These days, Suzuki only offers the 400S (dual-sport) and 400SM (motard/DS), neither of which come with a foot-operated starter.

Off-road or on the street, the DR-Z400S provides strong torque across the powerband and amazing throttle response. And it features remarkably smooth performance, complemented by conveniences such as electric starting and a compact, easy-to-read instrument cluster.

On the street, the great little motor and willing gearbox easily propel those 317 pounds as though riding a ballerina around town. Firm suspension is even firmer on the road, and the seat feels like a loaf of frozen bread—neither of which would be so bad if the ground weren’t so far away. For me, every stop requires full perineal pronation. If you’re six feet tall and weigh about 160 with a well-padded butt, you might love the DR-Z. It’ll zot right up past 90 mph or so, and it cruises okay for short hops at 70.

Honda NC700X Concept


Honda NC700X Concept Honda have released the first official pics of the new NC700S and NC700X, which are due to be shown at the EICMA motorcycle show this week. Pitched as fun and affordable mid-sized machines, the NC700S and NC700X offer easy handling and are suitable for commuting and/or weekend use.

These three bikes also share the same 47 hp 643cc engine and the 17″ wheels, fitted with a 120 tyre on the front and a 160 on the rear. The NC700X also boasts a storage space for the helmet in place of the fuel tank, which has been positioned under the saddle. Here are the first pics taken live at the 2011 EICMA, check them out.

The NT700X which I rode is one of three machines to debut the parallel twin engine, the other two being the more conventionally road-styled NC700S and the Integra scooter. It’s not just the power unit which they share, but the rolling chassis too, or as Honda calls it, the platform.

Hyosung yesterday said that they will also enter the lower cubic capacity market specially the 250cc and the 400cc. 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 Test Drive The Suzuki V-Strom 1000 was first introduced in 2002; it got its V-Strom name by the “V” of its 996cc V-twin engine, and the German word “Strom” which translates roughly to power. The V-Strom 1000 has had a great deal of success in America, but it has not been sold here since 2009.

Currently the V-Strom comes in two variations: the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and the Suzuki V-Strom 650, which differ only in the displacement of its engine. The V-Strom 1000 is powered by a 996cc V-Twin engine as used in the decommissioned Suzuki TL1000R sportbike and TL1000S street bike, while the V-Strom 650 shares the 645cc V-Twin from the SV650 and Gladius models. Both engines feature liquid-cooling and high efficiency 8-valve cylinder heads. Other similarities include six-speed transmissions, comfortable upright ergonomics, excellent wind protection and a large fuel tank making the V-Strom an excellent companion for extended motorcycle rides.

The suspension system is still comprised of a cartridge-style 43mm front fork with adjustable preload and a link-type rear suspension with adjustable rebound damping and preload. Both offer 6.3 inches of travel.Stopping power is provided by twin-piston calipers with a 310mm rotor up front and a single-piston caliper gripping a 260mm rotor at the rear. Unlike with the 650 version, the V-Strom 1000 models will not be offered with ABS.

2012 BMW S1000RR Spesification BMW’s significantly updated S1000RR is currently being tested at its world launch at Valencia, Spain. Senior Road Tester, Adam Child, is there on behalf of MCN and has just completed his third session. These are his first impressions.

The superbike returned in 2010 as a carry-over model, able to sustain these praise. Although a top machine in the literbike category, BMW totally revised the S1000RR for 2012, the superbike optimized based on the feedback from national super stock race data.

Even prior to the release of the original model in ’09, BMW was already hard at work testing and developing this second-generation S1000RR. Key areas that project manager Josef Mächler and his team wanted to address were creating a better handling chassis, refining the electronics and increasing punch on corner exits, all while maintaining the class-crushing power delivery that the RR has become famous for.

BMW’s optional Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) also received fresh programming. Most of the changes revolve around the functionality of wheelie control with the throttle butterfly valves opening more smoothly when a wheelie is detected. This was done to help avoid the abrupt and rather violent intervention experienced on the first generation bike. TC functionality in Race and Slick mode was also optimized based on the updated engine/throttle mapping. Lastly, a race data logger is available as an accessory and allows you to analyze the dynamics of the motorcycle at any point on track.

The S1000RR chassis has been slightly revised to optimize steering behavior and suspension action. The steering head angle has been changed from 66.1 to 66.0 degrees and fork offset has been reduced by 2.5mm to 29.5mm for quicker steering response. The wheelbase has been shortened 5mm as well.

While its roots are vintage, Vespa developed a modern three-valve, four-stroke engine for the Quarantasei. Vespa’s parent company Piaggio says the three-valve timing “optimizes the load motion in the cylinder and the positioning of the spark plug, increasing combustion and helping keep components cool.” It comes in two sizes, a 125cc and 150cc version. The 125cc engine is claimed to put out 11.6 hp and 7.6 lb-ft of torque while the 150 is said to muster 13 hp at 8000 rpm and 9.3 lb-ft of torque at 6500 rpm. It is fed electronically while a three-way catalytic converter in the small pipe slung indiscreetly down the right side helps it meet Euro 3 standards.

The bars are swept clean of anything unnecessary and end in wing-shaped LED turn signals. Ergonomic grips feature hand-stitched leather and brake levers have no visible pivots, cables or hydraulic lines. The hanging seat is similar to last year’s Moto Guzzi concept bikes and looks great hovering over a wasp-like engine cover. Right where you would expect to find a small, traditional headlight is a huge projector. A nearly horizontal LED taillight on the engine cover surrounds what appears to be the gas cap and there’s no license plate mount in sight.

Vespas have never been more efficient and pleasant to ride than they are today. But Piaggio does not rest on its laurels. So, it revisited the current lineup to see what its most-productive evolutionary step might be.From the way the front shield is curved to form the footboard to the sharply pointed rear end, side ventilation louvers, floating seat and airfoil-shaped handlebar, the Quarantasei was clearly inspired by the original 98cc Vespa.

2012 Triumph Tiger Explorer Concept have a brand-new adventure touring bike in their 2012 line-up – the Tiger Explorer which is fitted with a new, 1215cc three-cylinder engine that produces 137 horsepower and 121Nm of torque. This is a high-tech machine, with ride-by-wire throttle control, switchable anti-lock brakes and traction control.

Unsurprisingly Triumph is keeping most of the details on the Tiger Explorer still under wraps, likely wanting to wait until EICMA to release full the technical specifications, but we do know that the 2012 Triumph Tiger Explorer will be shaft-driven, have ride-by-wire throttle control, and come standard with switchable ABS & traction control. The chassis is made of steel, while the wheels are cast aluminum (19″ up front, 17″ in the back).

Photos reveal dual headlamps and a hydraulic clutch. Exhaust exits the right side and the Tiger has a center stand, though it’s uncertain whether or not this is a standard feature. Triumph has prepared the launch of its new flagship adventure touring motorcycle with a host of accessories. These include hard and soft luggage along with high and low seat options. Heated grips and other electrical options are expected with a 950W generator providing plenty of power. That includes auxiliary lighting.

I was afraid that it might be a little flighty or twitchy, but even after riding the thing like a loon, my fears turned out to be entirely unfounded. On highways and interstates, the 650 offers good wind protection and the adjustable windscreen allowed me to create a cruising environment that was free from the annoying buffeting that often plagues faired bikes.

The advantage of the aftermarket mount is that it enables your windshield to be adjusted for 25 degrees of tilt angle as well as 3″ (76mm) of height. And you can do that without any special tools while you are seated on your motorcycle. Another big benefit of this bracket is that it allows the air to flow under the windshield as well as over it.

Kawasaki has been working on this project for a long time and our very own Team Green Reid Nordin has been a driving force in its devolpment which means a REAL UTV guy giving REAL input and feedback. This has forced engineers to change things more than few times to really dial the Teryx 4 in

Like the frame, the Teryx4’s 749cc V-twin four-stroke engine is also new, offering 15 percent more power than the already stout unit in the two-seat Teryx, along with all the durability to deal with the rigors of spirited fun in challenging off-road environments. The V-twin design is revered for its stump-pulling power and easy-to-harness flexibility, which makes it the perfect powerplant for a machine like the Teryx4, which thrives on instantaneous and controllable low- and mid-range response partnered with eye-opening hauling ability

The engine breathes through a larger cartridge-style air filter with an intake chamber that is nearly three times as large as the two-seat Teryx (T2). Also, the intake has been repositioned from the console between the driver and passenger to underneath the front hood. The radiator is larger than the T2 with a bigger fan to push hot air. In addition, an extra fan has been installed on the underside of the chassis to help blow cool air across the mid-mounted engine itself. The secondary fan kicks on whenever the radiator fan is activated. There’s a blower warning light on the dash but we never saw it light up, nor heard the radiator fan kick on during an entire day of driving. Obviously the oversized radiator does a good job.

Electricity isn't free and though standard outlets may already be plentiful, you'll need to find a friendly someone who will let you plug in, or a recharging station, and then you wait, perhaps for hours. Maybe bikes will have the ability to add some non rechargeable batteries, so you run into a hardware store to buy a few motorcycle Duracells or the like, to get you far enough down the road to where a real recharge is possible.

Last but not least would be the established dealer network that Honda already has in place. It would be difficult for the current start-up OEMs to offer similar levels of support which in turn could give Honda the benefit of jumping into the game now that the market is wide open.
